California Energy Commission picks vanadium instead of lithium batteries for major storage project

The California Energy Commission has recently selected four energy storage projects incorporating vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) from UK-based operator Invinity Energy Systems for funding as part of an initiative to stimulate long-duration, non-lithium energy storage.

As California has sufficient renewable generation but occasional disparity between supply and demand, the state’s energy policy and planning agency, California Energy Commission is looking for alternative solutions. The commission especially sees long-duration storage as a key to stabilising the grid, while also keeping decarbonistion at the forefront.

Ferro-Alloy Resources Limited (LON:FAR) is developing the giant Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit in Kyzylordinskaya oblast of southern Kazakhstan.  The ore at this deposit is unlike that of nearly all other primary vanadium deposits and is capable of being treated by a much lower cost process.
