Full Report: Mexico
Predictions
- Cartel violence and security force focus on COVID-19 will push murder rate to record highs
- National Guard and local police forces will be unable to both enforce lockdown measures and take significant action against rising crime
- Although figures suggest security is improving in Mexico City, companies operating in some states including Guanajuato face increased security risks
Event
114 people were murdered across Mexico on 20 April, the highest daily number this year, and the second-highest since President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador (AMLO) took office in December 2018. Citing the health crisis, AMLO appealed to criminal groups to stop the killing and “think of yourselves and your families.”
