Event
The Balikpapan district court in East Kalimantan province sentenced seven Papuan students and activists to between 10 and 11 months’ imprisonment each on 17 June, following their convictions for treason. The individuals were initially arrested in Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, in September, for their role in unrest there last September. The sentences handed down were lower than anticipated, with prosecutors having sought terms ranging from five to 17 years.
