Predictions
- Cartel attempt to assassinate Mexico City police chief in high-end residential area does not indicate significant increase in threat to foreign businesses
- Government unlikely to significantly change overall security policy, despite rising public frustration with its soft approach to organised crime
- Companies operating in Mexico will face rising crime rates, and further sporadic attacks in capital’s high-end areas will remain possible
Event
A group of nearly 30 gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying Omar Garcia Harfuch, the secretary of public security for Mexico City, just after 6am on 26 June. The attack took place in Lomas de Chapultepec, a wealthy residential neighbourhood, where most foreign embassies are located. Two bodyguards and a passer-by were killed. Garcia Harfuch – effectively the head of the police in the city – was hit three times, but survived.
