Predictions
- Increased targeting of foreign journalists will reduce access to reporting on China, raising political distrust and investor uncertainty
- US and Australian journalists and activists will face greatest detention risks, particularly those with ethnic Chinese backgrounds
- Detention risks will remain low for business travellers, but high-profile individuals will face heightened risk of monitoring or harassment
Event
Canberra and Beijing negotiated the departure on 8 September of the last two foreign-accredited journalists working in China for Australian news outlets. Prior to their departure, both had been visited at their homes by state security officers, who told them they could not leave China due to their involvement in an investigation into a third journalist.
