Palm oil, often dubbed “liquid gold” for its versatility and economic importance, is an edible vegetable oil derived from the fruit of oil palm trees, primarily the African oil palm (Elaeis guineensis) and the American oil palm (Elaeis oleifera). While it has found its way into numerous products we use daily, including food, cosmetics, and biofuels, palm oil production has raised significant environmental and social concerns. This has led to the development of sustainable palm oil practices to mitigate its negative impacts.
Palm oil is super popular because it’s cheap and can be used in many things, like cookies, shampoo, and lipstick. But there’s a problem with it. To make all this palm oil, people cut down many trees, hurting our environment. It also makes climate change worsen. In some places, workers don’t get treated very well either. So, while palm oil is in so many things we use every day, it’s causing big problems for our planet and the people involved in making it. That’s the Palm Oil Paradox – something good for business but bad for the Earth and people.
