Cancer remains one of the biggest global health challenges, and early detection is crucial for better outcomes. Many men, however, are unaware of key warning signs, leading to delayed diagnoses and higher mortality rates. By recognising these symptoms early and seeking medical attention, men can take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.
According to Dr Donald Babu, Consultant Surgical Oncologist at Medicover Hospitals, cancer in men is alarmingly common, yet the lack of awareness about symptoms leads to poor prognosis. He stresses the importance of vigilance and timely medical intervention. The fight against cancer requires meticulous planning and a multidisciplinary approach, but it starts with being attentive to potential warning signs.
Among the critical symptoms men should not ignore are persistent bowel changes, including unexplained constipation, diarrhoea, or blood in the stool, which may signal colon cancer. Unintentional weight loss of more than 5–10 kilograms, while seemingly desirable, can be an early sign of stomach, lung, or pancreatic cancer. A lingering cough or hoarseness might indicate lung, thyroid, or laryngeal cancer, while persistent difficulty swallowing could be linked to oesophageal or throat cancer. Blood in the urine is another red flag, potentially pointing to kidney, prostate, or bladder cancer.
Oral cancer can manifest through white patches, ulcers, or tenderness around the cheeks and lips. Chronic fatigue, which affects daily activities, could signal leukaemia or gastrointestinal cancers. Unusual lumps, particularly in the neck, underarm, groin, or testicles, warrant immediate medical attention as they may indicate lymphoma or testicular cancer. Skin changes, such as abnormal bleeding, scaling, slow-healing sores, or evolving moles, should also not be overlooked, as they could be early signs of skin cancer.
Testicular changes, including swelling, heaviness, or asymmetry, should prompt a consultation with a healthcare professional, as they may be linked to testicular cancer. Recognising and acting on these signs early can significantly improve treatment outcomes and overall survival rates.
