The EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) took full effect on May 25, 2018. Since then, as of December 2018, there were already more than 95,000 reported cases of GDPR violation. The fines associated with GDPR non-compliance can cost businesses up to 4% of their annual revenue. There are several high profile GDPR cases that are currently being tried. The biggest penalty imposed to date was against Google for a GDPR violation in France costing the tech giant 50 million euros. While most of these cases involve infringements on information collected online, the GDPR is technology agnostic. This means that as long as you’re collecting personal data, you’re required by law to comply.
