A dying mother spoke of her joy yesterday after a U-turn by defence chiefs means her two young children will benefit from her pension after all.
Former Royal Air Force linguist Samantha McConnell, 46, has six to eight weeks to live from pancreatic and liver cancer. She had feared “archaic” rules would stop daughter Grace, five, and son Rory, two, from receiving her £15,000-a-year pension.
But after a campaign by Samantha’s family and friends, Defence Secretary Gavin Williamson announced the decision had been reversed and Grace and Rory will receive a children’s pension until they are 21. MoD bosses originally told Samantha her children were not entitled to her pension because they were born nine months after she left the RAF and she had not married their father.
