Iran: Latest US sanctions unlikely to trigger significant Iranian response

Predictions

  • Latest US sanctions unlikely to trigger significant Iranian response in coming month as Tehran awaits outcome of US election
  • US President Trump’s re-election would further elevate tensions, increasing risk of escalation in Strait of Hormuz between US and Iranian naval vessels
  • US sanctions on Iran will remain in place regardless of who wins US election, with domestic pressure limiting scope for re-engagement on both sides

Event

The US on 21 September imposed new sanctions on 27 Iranian individuals and entities connected to Tehran’s nuclear and weapons programmes, including Iran’s defence ministry and the Atomic Energy Organisation of Iran.
