Malaysia
Predictions
- Temporary foreign worker ban will increase operational difficulties for firms, particularly those that rely on low-skilled labour
- Government focus on migrant workers will raise pressure on firms to improve pay and working conditions in order to attract more local staff
- Industries employing highly skilled workers will find it harder to hire from abroad, though ban will mostly impact plantation, manufacturing and construction
Event
The Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FFM) asked the government on 24 June not to impose a ban on hiring foreign workers. The Malaysian Estate Owners’ Association, which represents the interests of the plantation industry, also asked the government on 26 June to exempt the economically important palm oil sector from the ban.
