Pioneer Energy is redefining emissions control in the oil and gas sector. With the support of a $5 million award from the U.S. Department of Energy and the Environmental Protection Agency, the company, in collaboration with Diversified Energy, is bringing its cutting-edge Emission Control Treater™ (ECT) technology to marginal wells. This development signals a transformative step toward eliminating flaring and emissions while improving crude yield and operational efficiency.
Pioneer Energy’s ECT technology represents a breakthrough in well pad production. Its advanced separation capabilities outperform traditional phase separators, yielding 5–10% more crude by capturing otherwise wasted gases and liquids. This closed-system solution eliminates routine flaring and negates the need for atmospheric storage tanks, achieving near-zero emissions. Integrated with cloud-connected automation, the ECT allows operators to monitor and control production remotely, optimising manpower and reducing maintenance expenses. Its modular design further enhances operational flexibility, ensuring better capital allocation and lower long-term ownership costs.
With the awarded funding, Pioneer Energy will scale down the ECT to create cost-efficient, drop-in mini-ECT units tailored for marginal wells. These units will replace existing infrastructure at Diversified Energy’s East Texas production sites, demonstrating their efficiency and environmental impact over a 12-month period. The Cotton Valley Basin project underscores the potential for these units to extend the economic viability of older wells while adhering to stricter environmental standards.
Eyal Aronoff, CEO of Pioneer Energy, emphasised the importance of this milestone: “This award accelerates our efforts to commercialise the ECT for marginal wells. By eliminating methane emissions and flaring, we’re not only extending the life of these wells but also advancing U.S. energy and environmental goals.” Paul Espenan, Senior Vice President of EHS&R at Diversified Energy, added, “Partnering with Pioneer Energy and leveraging this DOE grant exemplifies our commitment to sustainable energy solutions. Together, we’re demonstrating how high-performance, cost-effective technologies can enhance environmental stewardship.”
Pioneer Energy and Diversified Energy are leading the charge to modernise oil production infrastructure while prioritising sustainability. Their collaboration promises a future where efficient operations and environmental responsibility go hand in hand.
