The National Agricultural Research Centre (CNRA) and the Cotton-Cashew Council (CCA) are joining forces on a project aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of cashew nuts in Côte d’Ivoire.
A primary objective of this collaboration is the development and deployment of high-performing cashew nut varieties that offer increased yield per hectare. This initiative will leverage technology developed through the Cashew Development Centres established nationwide.
The partnership has already borne fruit, resulting in the creation of a cashew gene bank and a collection of cashew trees for study. The establishment of Cashew Development Centres is another significant achievement.
To further support the initiative, the CCA has provided the CNRA with new vehicles, facilitating researchers’ efforts to deploy the improved cashew varieties effectively.
For the 2023 crop year, over 100,000 improved cashew seedlings were supplied to producers, thanks to the establishment of 23 nurserymen.
These centres play a crucial role in connecting cashew growers with the latest research and improved varieties, ensuring that advancements in cashew cultivation are effectively communicated and utilised by producers.
Côte d’Ivoire’s investment in research and improved cashew nut varieties reflects a strong commitment to sustainable growth in the industry. By focusing on higher yields and supporting researchers, the country aims to solidify its position as a leading producer of cashews.
