So it is little surprise that the latest property to open in the city is luxurious, opulent and flashy, boasting 24-karat ceilings, over 6,400 chandeliers and its own private beach.
It is called The Emerald Palace Kempinski Dubai and cost £548 million to build. And of course its rooms are reassuringly expensive, with the presidential suite going for an eye-watering £5,500 per night.
In each of the hotel’s rooms there is a relaxing lounge area, a polished marble bathroom and a balcony with striking views across either the gardens, Arabian Gulf or the Palm Lagoon.
