Uskmouth Sustainable Energy Park set to transform energy storage

SAE Renewables owns the Uskmouth site in Newport, South Wales, along with its grid connection, infrastructure, and existing power station. The company is focused on converting the site into a sustainable energy park, with the potential to generate approximately 1GW through a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).

The Uskmouth site offers a strategic advantage due to its unique access to the grid and extensive land and infrastructure, making it an ideal location for a large-scale BESS facility. Integrating BESS into transmission and distribution systems is increasingly seen as vital for accelerating the inclusion of intermittent renewable energy into the UK’s electricity supply.

SAE has already developed and sold its first BESS project, a 230MW facility currently under construction, to Quinbrook Infrastructure Partners. In addition, three more projects are under development, with a combined capacity of 719MW and grid connection dates starting in 2026.

The site’s infrastructure provides significant opportunities for other energy solutions, and SAE is actively exploring additional projects at the Uskmouth Energy Hub.

SAE Renewables Limited (LON:SAE) was founded in 2005 as a supplier of tidal stream turbines, SAE quickly grew to include development of tidal stream projects and is the majority owner of MeyGen, the world’s largest tidal stream energy project.
