Why energy storage?

The intermittency of renewable energy sources (solar, wind etc.) is a major barrier in their large-scale implementation. Therefore, it’s important to store the energy for optimised usage when the energy sources are not available or sufficient to satisfy the load demand. Depending upon the scale of applications such as portable/stationary, and response time, the choice of energy storage is determined.

What are the main benefits of having VRFB storage?

  1. Scalability of power and energy capacity (power capacity depends on VRFB stack size, and energy capacity depends on the volume of electrolyte stored in two tanks)
  2. Very long cycle-life (>20000) — close to the life of solar PV modules
  3. Zero probability of cross-contamination through membrane
  4. Deep discharge capacity

Ferro-Alloy Resources Ltd (LON:FAR) is developing the giant Balasausqandiq vanadium deposit in Kyzylordinskaya oblast of southern Kazakhstan. The ore at this deposit is unlike that of nearly all other primary vanadium deposits and is capable of being treated by a much lower cost process.
