US-China tensions – Tension between the US and China continues to mount. This week saw the US house of representatives pass a bill, imposing sanctions on banks that do business with Chinese officials who are involved in cracking down on pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong. This follows Beijing’s new strict security law that is currently being imposed on the people of Hong Kong. These strict laws feature harsh sentences, some as long as life in prison, fuelling uncertainty amongst the 7.5 million residents, along with the 1,300 foreign companies with regional headquarters based there. China issued warnings on Friday that strict countermeasures would be imposed if the country continues to take action against the new law.
China also issued the same warning to the UK, after Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said the UK will offer a home for millions of Hong Kong residents in support of the Hong Kong population and the new rules that are
looking to be enforced upon them.
COVID-19 – The UK looks to begin the next stage in its plan for the reopening of its economy. This week saw the announcement that people arriving from Germany, France, Spain and Italy will now no longer have
to undergo a two-week quarantine. The 4th of July marks the reopening of pubs across the UK, along with other service sector businesses including restaurants, cafes and hairdressers.
