One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime—of that number, studies show 85 percent of women don’t have a family history. “We know that physical activity makes a difference and we know that breastfeeding makes a difference, but most people aren’t really aware that nutrition can play a role in that too,” said Jeanne Struve, a clinical dietitian with Lee Health.
There are foods you can add to your daily diet that can lower your risk for breast cancer—things like fiber, soy, and cruciferous vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts. “Fiber is your friend, and unfortunately, a lot of the ways that people choose to eat they have very low intakes of fiber. The average American women get about 15 grams of fiber a day, and the recommendation is a minimum of 25 grams a day,” said Struve.
