Cordless consumer electronics with high energy density technology

Introduction

Consumer electronics have been around for a long time but over recent years, designers have started to introduce cordless versions which have been popular in the consumer market. A cordless device enables people to move around with it so it was inevitable that people would then want them to be smaller and more streamlined for ease of use. For example, when cordless vacuum cleaners were introduced they were widely praised but then got criticised for being too bulky. Portable didn’t just mean cordless.

So for a cordless vacuum cleaner, it needs to be:

  • Light – enabling people to hold it for as long as necessary
  • Long lasting – a cordless domestic appliance that quickly runs out of energy negates the benefits of it being cordless
  • Safe – especially if the appliance gets hot

Goliath is Ilika’s Wh-level solid state battery technology. Whilst lithium ion battery pouch cells are expected to reach a plateau of 300-350 Wh/kg (with improvement in packaging, renewed effort to use Li metal nodes and the use of more Ni-rich cathodes), solid state batteries have the potential to reach competitive energy density values.

Ilika plc (LON:IKA) is a pioneer in solid state battery technology enabling solutions for applications in Industrial IoT, MedTech, Electric Vehicles and Consumer Electronics.
