Delayed clamping, as the name suggests, is when your midwife or physician waits a certain period of time after your baby is born before cutting the umbilical cord.
The delay usually lasts between one to five minutes. This allows your baby to receive more blood from the placenta and has been shown to have many health benefits to the new-born child. The extra blood means your baby will have a higher number of oxygen-rich red blood cells for the first few days and increased levels of iron, which supports healthy brain development.
