Prostate cancer is a silent killer, often showing no symptoms until it has advanced. With 1 in 8 men diagnosed in their lifetime, early detection is crucial. This Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, Councillor Jacob Allen is stepping up—literally—by taking part in Prostate Cancer UK’s March the Month challenge, walking 11,000 steps daily to honour the 11,000 men lost to the disease each year.
In Brighton & Hove, prostate cancer was the second-leading cause of cancer deaths among men between 2016 and 2020. However, over half of cases diagnosed in 2019 were caught in early stages when treatment is most effective. The risk is higher for men over 50, Black men, and those with a family history of the disease. Without obvious symptoms in early stages, awareness is key—knowing your risk and speaking to a GP could be life-saving.
Councillor Allen joins thousands nationwide in this challenge to fund vital research and support services for men and families affected by prostate cancer. He emphasises the importance of early detection, urging Brighton & Hove residents to recognise the signs and take action.
Symptoms to watch for include difficulty urinating, frequent trips to the bathroom at night, blood in urine or semen, pelvic pain, and trouble maintaining an erection. Any of these should prompt an immediate visit to a GP.
Prostate Cancer UK continues to drive research into new treatments and offers essential support to those affected. Raising awareness and funding research today will help save lives tomorrow.
