IoT – Moving to the Next Stage of Evolution

IoT has come a long way and is now moving onto the next stage of its evolution – building on the innovation and bringing all these smart pieces together to offer more comprehensive information.  However, the IoT area features an extremely diverse set of applications with different requirements.

As more devices become connected with more communication data being gathered, using the minimum amount of resources is vital. These resources include the size of the device, the components used and the power consumed. One of the main challenges that prevents IoT scaling to mass deployment is longevity. Many IoT devices need to last years, not months.

In addition, IoT devices need to be installed in a wider range of environments often with the requirement to be able to work in both low and high temperatures. Some of these environments may be hostile and difficult to access, but even for those that aren’t, power supply is key.

Progress in being made and at Ilika we’ve been developing solid state battery technology that helps the next generation of IoT devices be more efficient and smaller so they can be used in more places whilst needing less maintenance. Stereax®  P180 has a lifespan of up to 10 years and can support temperatures as low as –40˚C and as high as +150˚C.
