Only half of GP appointments are with an actual doctor and patients in some areas see other staff two thirds of the time, according to NHS data.
Workers such as nurses, pharmacists and dispensers, health visitors, acupuncturists, osteopaths and chiropodists are picking up an increasing amount of the load, analysis by The Times suggests.
GP leaders said that a doctor was not always the most appropriate person for a patient to see and their teams were highly skilled.
