Pioneering Critical Minerals and Economic Transformation

Pensana is at the forefront of reshaping Africa’s mining landscape with its Longonjo rare earth project in Angola. In a sector marked by long timelines and complex challenges, the company’s innovative approach offers a compelling vision for economic transformation, sustainable development, and local empowerment. This article delves into Pensana’s collaborative model, highlighting its potential as a blueprint for the future of mining in Africa and beyond.

The world faces a critical minerals shortfall as the global push for electrification and renewable energy intensifies. Achieving climate targets requires vast quantities of rare earths, vital for electric vehicles and wind turbines. However, with up to 600 new mines needed worldwide, the challenge lies in balancing urgency with sustainability. Pensana’s Longonjo project, powered by hydroelectric energy and strategically linked to the Atlantic Port of Lobito, stands as a symbol of what is possible when private investment aligns with local and global priorities.

Pensana’s operations in Angola have set new standards for community engagement, environmental stewardship, and economic contribution. The company has invested over $70 million in exploration and studies, culminating in one of the largest undeveloped rare earth deposits globally. Once operational, the mine will contribute around 5% of global production in mixed rare earth carbonate, with export revenue expected to surpass $6 billion over its 20-year lifespan. The project is also poised to generate over 2,400 direct and indirect jobs, with a commitment to sourcing 95% of its workforce locally.

Crucially, Pensana has broken away from the traditional “dig and ship” model by establishing a state-of-the-art processing facility in Angola. This move ensures value addition within the country, fostering skills transfer and creating a more sustainable and inclusive economic impact. The company’s initiatives, including its award-winning sustainability framework, have been recognised internationally, positioning Pensana as a leader in responsible mining practices.

The human story behind Pensana’s success is equally compelling. From empowering a young Angolan geologist to lead groundbreaking discoveries to forging partnerships with international stakeholders, the company exemplifies how collaboration and innovation can drive meaningful change. As highlighted by its achievements, including prestigious awards and growing global recognition, Pensana is laying the foundation for a mining model that not only meets critical mineral demands but also uplifts communities and preserves the environment.

Pensana is transforming how the world views mining in Africa, showing that with the right approach, the sector can fuel economic growth and sustainable development. Its Longonjo project is more than a mine; it is a catalyst for a brighter future for Angola and an inspiration for the 600 new mines the energy transition demands.

Pensana plc (LON:PRE) explores and mines neodymium, praseodymium, and rare earth minerals. The Company’s flagship assets are the Saltend rare earth refinery project in the United Kingdom and Longonjo neodymium and praseodymium (NdPr) Project in Angola.
