COVID-19 – The latest rise in the Coronavirus (COVID-19) cases globally, including fresh outbreaks in South Korea, Italy, Iran and Japan has been declared an emergency by the World Health Organization (WHO). The fears are now, that the virus becomes a global pandemic and hits global growth hard. In response to the latest outbreaks, Japan’s Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has taken action by deciding that all schools in Japan are to be closed from the 2nd March until the end of the spring break (8th April), Iran cancelled prayers on Friday in an attempt to try and stop social gatherings, as 388 cases confirmed, and schools and museums were closed in Northern Italy at the start of the week, which have now mostly re-opened as authorities yearn to get back to normality.
Brexit deal – UK Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, has warned the EU that if there is not enough progress in the Brexit negotiations by June, he is willing to walk away from the negotiating table, focusing instead on preparations for a hard exit on World Trade Organization terms at the end of the year. In the UK government’s negotiating mandate, published on Thursday, it stated that they hope to agree the “broad outline of an agreement” by the meeting in June, in an attempt to have the agreement “rapidly finalised” by September.
