COVID-19 – This week marked a milestone, as 1 million confirmed cases of the coronavirus were reported worldwide. This figure was reached just 4 months after the pathogen surfaced. As it stands, fewer than 20
countries worldwide are left free of reported infections.
In the US, jobless claims have spiked, rising to 10 million individuals seeking unemployment benefits within the last two weeks. This came as the country reported their highest daily death toll, setting a record for the
highest daily figure recorded by any country so far at 1,200. While this brings their total to around 6,000 fatalities, their death toll remains lower than in Spain, where they are battling one of the worst outbreaks across the world, passing 10,000 virus related fatalities, with Italy being the only country recording more.
While death figures continue to rise worldwide, some analysists and researchers have suggested that many countries could be nearing their peak in fatality figures. This follows news emerging on Wednesday that Italy experienced a decline in death count, hinting that countries across Europe could expect to see declining daily fatality figures in the near future. This has posed a new dilemma for policymakers who are left to weigh
up the options of easing restrictions imposed too soon; against the devastating economic impacts these same restrictions are having.
