UK politics – This week saw a live TV debate between the Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the leader of the opposition, Jeremy Corbyn prior to the election on the 12th December. On Thursday, the Labour party revealed their election manifesto which promised radical changes to the economy and target billionaires. Although the Conservatives have not released their manifesto, the markets still see nothing other than a Conservative victory on the 12th December.
Hong Kong bill – The US Senate voted overwhelmingly 417-1 to support a bill backing the protesters in Hong Kong, which has been sent to President Donald Trump to either approve or Veto. The bill would require annual reviews of Hong Kong’s special status under US law and would sanction any officials deemed responsible for human rights abuse. As expected, the bill has renewed market worries around the trade negotiations, as China is firmly against the protests continuing.
