Is sodium-ion battery tech a viable alternative for India?

Since 2010, there has been a renewed interest among the battery research community in Sodium-based cathode/anode/electrolyte, and since then a tremendous development has happened. Over the last couple of years, a completely new ecosystems is being developed around this chemistry, with more than 10 companies announcing commercialisation plans by 2024/2025.

The fundamentals of Lithium and Sodium-ion battery electrochemistry were established almost simultaneously in the 1970’s. Their working principle was inherently identical. With the advent of high-capacity Lithium Cobalt Oxide cathode material and Sony’s successful demonstration of Lithium-ion cell fabrication processes, Lithium-ion battery technology leapfrogged. Beyond 1990’s almost the entire battery research community focused their attention on the development of Lithium-ion Battery. Progress was fast in discovering, optimizing, and scaling up the Lithium-ion battery materials and processes.
