ATR, the global leader in regional aircraft manufacturing, is revolutionising passenger experiences with the integration of Starlink high-speed internet across its fleet. Following rigorous tests on its ATR 72-600 aircraft and certification by EASA, ATR is ready to equip its planes with cutting-edge connectivity. Air New Zealand, a trusted partner, will lead this innovation, introducing Starlink-enabled flights domestically in 2025.
ATR has partnered with PMV Engineering, which developed modifications enabling the seamless integration of SpaceX’s Starlink technology into ATR’s aircraft. Available as a retrofit for ATR 72-500 and -600 models through a Supplemental Type Certificate, this offering enables ATR operators globally to bring unprecedented in-flight connectivity to their passengers.
Starlink, engineered by SpaceX, stands as the largest low-Earth orbit satellite constellation, providing broadband internet capable of supporting high-bandwidth activities like video calls, streaming, and online gaming. By adopting Starlink, ATR ensures passengers enjoy connectivity that mirrors their everyday online experience, transforming regional air travel.
Air New Zealand’s Chief Digital Officer, Nikhil Ravishankar, praised the collaboration, highlighting its potential to redefine travel for both leisure and business passengers. Meanwhile, PMV Engineering’s CEO, Eric Sperazza, emphasised the innovation’s transformative potential for ATR customers and passengers. ATR’s Senior Vice-President of Engineering, Daniel Cuchet, described the Starlink integration as a milestone, marking a new era of comfort and connectivity in regional aviation.
The Starlink system is more than a passenger amenity. Pilots will benefit from enhanced access to real-time weather services, improving operational safety. The compact and aerodynamic design of the Starlink antenna makes it an ideal fit for ATR’s aircraft, aligning with the company’s dedication to operational efficiency.
With its fully connected cabins already offering USB ports, In-Flight Entertainment systems, and other premium amenities under the ATR HighLine collection, ATR is set to meet the rising global demand for in-flight connectivity. This innovation is expected to gain significant traction in regions like Japan, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the United States, where high-speed internet is a key priority for travellers.
ATR continues to push boundaries in regional aviation by blending cutting-edge technology with passenger comfort. The company remains the trusted choice for airlines seeking reliable, efficient, and forward-thinking aircraft solutions.
