Biobased plastics drive Europe’s sustainable packaging revolution

The EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is reshaping the future of packaging, with biobased plastics at the forefront of the transition to sustainability. These innovative materials are critical to reducing dependence on fossil resources while significantly lowering greenhouse gas emissions. As the EU pushes forward with its circular economy and climate neutrality goals, biobased plastics are emerging as a game-changer for sustainable packaging solutions.

Hasso von Pogrell, Managing Director of European Bioplastics (EUBP), highlights the importance of these materials in cutting carbon footprints by leveraging the carbon absorbed during plant growth. This approach not only minimises environmental impact but also ensures packaging retains the performance and functionality required for modern applications. The integration of biobased plastics into packaging solutions supports the EU’s mission to enhance circularity and sustainability without compromising efficiency.

Biobased plastics are not just an alternative but a necessity in the EU’s drive towards sustainable packaging systems. By seamlessly fitting into existing recycling streams, they contribute to the creation of a circular economy for packaging. Their adoption directly supports the goals set out in the PPWR, reducing reliance on fossil-based materials and fostering an eco-friendly packaging landscape.

Compostable packaging, particularly when certified to European standards such as EN 13432, presents additional benefits for applications like food packaging. These solutions facilitate organic waste management and reduce contamination in recycling streams, making them a valuable asset in waste reduction efforts. However, the success of compostable packaging largely depends on Member States’ commitment to implementing the Waste Framework Directive. Effective infrastructure for separate bio-waste collection and composting is essential for realising the full potential of these materials.

The EU’s waste management landscape varies significantly across Member States, with some lagging in infrastructure and policy implementation. Addressing these challenges requires targeted investments, incentives for innovation, and widespread education on sustainable waste management. EUBP remains dedicated to promoting biobased, biodegradable, and compostable materials, playing a crucial role in shaping the next steps of the PPWR, particularly in the development of secondary legislation that will drive the industry forward.

European Bioplastics (EUBP) champions the advancement of sustainable packaging by fostering the development and adoption of biobased and compostable materials. By driving innovation and supporting regulatory frameworks, EUBP is helping to build a circular, climate-friendly packaging industry in Europe.
