Chris O’Shea, the chief executive of Centrica, the owner of British Gas, has called for mandatory installation of smart energy meters in all households to help achieve net zero targets.
Despite resistance to these devices, O’Shea urged ministers to make smart meters compulsory to meet the government’s goal of 100% home coverage.
Speaking to the Commons energy select committee, he argued that a mandatory approach is necessary for an efficient smart grid to keep future costs low.
Smart meters, which measure and transmit gas and electricity usage data to both consumers and suppliers, are said to help manage energy wastage and minimise fuel consumption, benefiting the environment.
