France-Germany Parliamentary Assembly to discuss Geothermal Energy

A joint position paper advocating for the expanded use of geothermal energy is set to be a key topic at the upcoming France-Germany parliamentary assembly, scheduled for 24 June 2024. The assembly aims to reconcile policy differences between the two countries, fostering a unified approach to both hydrogen and geothermal energy.

Comprising 100 lawmakers from the national parliaments of France and Germany, the assembly meets twice a year. Although it cannot make laws, it plays a crucial role in coordinating efforts between the two national legislative bodies.

The joint position paper on geothermal energy seeks to establish a cohesive French-German stance on geothermal technology by 2025. It also aims to facilitate a European strategy to support geothermal energy. Andres Jung, a CDU lawmaker from Germany, highlighted the significant potential of geothermal energy in the Franco-German border region of the Upper Rhine. Jung noted that developing geothermal energy would necessitate a cross-border framework encompassing technology, authorisation, and security. He emphasised the importance of advancing the expansion of European grids in a cross-border and intelligent manner.

In addition to geothermal energy, the position paper will advocate for a shared European strategy on hydrogen. While promoting openness to hydrogen of all colours, the paper acknowledges the primacy of green hydrogen.
