Researchers at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory have developed a sodium-ion battery with greatly extended longevity in laboratory tests, thus overcoming one of the major obstacles hindering the large-scale application of the technology.
In a paper published in the journal Nature Energy, the scientists explain that a shift in the ingredients that make up the liquid core of the battery prevents the performance issues that have bedevilled sodium-based batteries so far.
The expectation – they say – is that one day, this battery powers electric vehicles and stores energy from the sun.
