During the Google Zeitgeist talk in 2011, the company’s then chief scientist Peter Norvig said one of his most famous quotes: “We don’t have better algorithms than anyone else; we just have more data.”
Despite this, the tech community has only recently begun to understand the importance of comprehensive and reliable data. These days, we are starting to figure out how data quality is linked to effective AI systems and how, to cite another quote often attributed to Norvig, “More data beats clever algorithms, but better data beats more data.”
This is precisely why I’ve been discussing how to improve data quality by confronting the ways that our human subjectivity might interfere with how we collect, process and analyze data sets.
