RDSS revolutionising India’s power distribution sector

In an ambitious move to revolutionize India’s power distribution sector, the Ministry of Power has inaugurated the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a comprehensive initiative designed to curb technical and commercial inefficiencies plaguing the system. The heart of this reform lies in its dual objective: to diminish the perennial gap between the cost of electricity supply and the revenue generated from tariffs, and to significantly reduce Aggregate Technical & Commercial (AT&C) losses.

The RDSS, with its strategic focus on the installation of smart metering systems, aims to bring about a paradigm shift in how electricity is distributed and consumed. The initiative includes the deployment of 2.64 lakh smart meters, bolstered by orders worth Rs 7794 crore aimed at revamping the existing infrastructure. This move is not just about upgrading physical assets; it’s a step towards embracing technology to foster a more reliable and transparent power distribution network. The scheme, by promoting prepaid metering and system metering work, envisions a future where discrepancies in billing and energy consumption are significantly minimized.
