Smart metering solution by CyanConnode

CyanConnode’s Omni IoT platform introduces Omnimesh, an advanced smart electricity metering system for utilities. This robust and scalable solution utilises industry-recognised open standards to deliver cost-effective, multi-technology communications, supporting Smart Grid AMI solutions. Omnimesh Smart Metering enhances utilities’ operational efficiency, allowing for innovative commercial models, improved customer experiences, automated billing, and rapid resolution of outages. Additionally, it reduces distribution issues and losses, and manages demand in real time during peak periods. By adopting Omnimesh, utilities can future-proof their investments, enabling existing applications to scale and new business applications to be deployed over the same infrastructure.

Omnimesh stands out with its support for proven standards such as DLMS/COSEM, IEEE 802.14.4, IPv6 6LoWPAN, and TLS/DTLS. It is designed to comply with global and country-specific AMI standards, including the Bureau of Indian Standards IS 15959 and IS6444. The system’s meter vendor and protocol-agnostic framework ensures interoperability and allows for multi-meter vendor deployments. The Headend (HES) Application Programme Interface (API) facilitates rapid integration, reducing both complexity and costs. Its resilient, self-forming, and self-healing mesh communications network maximises data transfer while minimising human effort and error. Omnimesh is optimised for urban, rural, and hybrid deployments, supporting IPv6 6LowPAN narrowband RF mesh and 2G/3G/4G/5G cellular multi-technology communication. The build-as-you-go networks help reduce capital expenditure and the total cost of ownership.

The benefits of Omnimesh include the ability to gather complete, accurate, and timely customer metering data, supporting loss reduction programmes and maximising billing revenues. This leads to reduced energy costs, improved power quality, and enhanced customer experiences. The system improves energy distribution reliability and resilience by quickly identifying and responding to peak demand, locating faults rapidly, and implementing real-time controls to prevent minor issues from escalating into major outages. By driving consumer behaviour through real-time pricing, Omnimesh effectively reduces peak demand. CyanConnode’s IP-based Omnimesh provides a robust, turnkey solution for smart metering, meeting a range of needs with its highly versatile networking capabilities. Utilities will find its open standard architecture highly effective, benefiting from its flexibility and scalability.

Omnimesh’s sub-GHz narrowband RF mesh technology offers a flexible and high-performing communication solution. In dense urban environments, RF mesh provides unparalleled deep-indoor coverage and RF spectrum efficiency, while in sparse rural areas, it can cover long distances with a maximum range of 10 km and a practical range of 2 km, adapting to environmental changes. The Omnimesh Cellular communication technologies serve as excellent WAN backhaul links, providing cost-effective connectivity to remote devices. Available in all cellular regions and bands, these products support 2G, 3G, 4G, and emerging 5G standards, including NB-IoT and Cat-M, and feature dual SIM capabilities.

Omnimesh ensures ease of integration and deployment through API or secure connections to in-field SCADA systems, enabling large-scale networks of Omnimesh-based meters to be deployed efficiently and robustly with minimal human intervention. The system supports communication using a variety of Network Interface Card (NIC) modules, with Omnimesh RF mesh and Omnimesh Cellular modules being interchangeable for maximum deployment flexibility. The Omnimesh Integrated Gateway combines the best of RF mesh and Cellular products in a compact form, suitable for integration into standard smart meters, eliminating the need for standalone gateway installations.

Security is a critical component of Omnimesh, which provides standards-based, critical infrastructure-grade security. This includes Public Key Infrastructure and certificate management, Key Storage in Hardware Security Modules, and state-of-the-art cryptography to ensure the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of business data and functions. The Omnimesh Integrated Gateway further enhances physical security by incorporating gateway functions within the protected perimeter of a standard smart meter.

CyanConnode’s Omnimesh offers a comprehensive, flexible, and secure solution for smart metering, meeting the diverse needs of modern utilities while ensuring cost-effectiveness and scalability.
