After a lifetime of using petroleum-based materials, the lure of “planet-friendly” plastics is hard to dispute. But be careful around these labels: many of them offer incomplete information about the product’s actual impact on the environment.
“Bioplastic” is a recent development from the world of materials chemistry that uses plant material rather than fossil fuels to create the complex polymer chains that make up plastic. Many folks assume that because plants are involved, the end result must be biodegradable.
