Eco-friendly solution: The advantages of bioplastic tree guards

Bioplastic tree guards are an eco-friendly alternative to traditional plastic tree guards that are commonly used to protect young trees from damage and animal grazing. Bioplastics are made from renewable materials such as corn starch, sugarcane, or vegetable fats and oils, which makes them a more sustainable option than traditional plastics that are derived from non-renewable fossil fuels.

One of the main advantages of bioplastic tree guards is that they are biodegradable. This means that when they are no longer needed or when they reach the end of their useful life, they will break down into natural substances without leaving behind any harmful residues. In contrast, traditional plastic tree guards can take hundreds of years to degrade and can cause harm to the environment in the meantime.

Another advantage of bioplastic tree guards is that they are made from renewable resources. This means that they do not contribute to the depletion of non-renewable fossil fuels and do not produce the same amount of greenhouse gas emissions as traditional plastics. Additionally, they can be made from locally sourced materials, which reduces the carbon footprint of transportation.

Bioplastic tree guards also have similar properties to traditional plastic guards, such as being UV-resistant, flexible, and durable. They can be used in a variety of applications, such as protecting young trees in urban areas, in orchards, or in reforestation projects.

Biome Technologies plc (LON:BIOM) Biome Bioplastics and Suregreen partnered to create biodegradable tree shelters. The Vigilis Bio tree shelters are made from biodegradable biomaterials and have specifically been designed to guard and protect the first 5-7 years of a tree’s life. They then slowly fragment into small pieces that completely biodegrade in the span of two years, leaving only CO2, water and a few naturally occurring minerals.
