Intelligent street lighting for modern cities

Cities and towns around the world are increasingly recognising the importance of reducing energy usage. Street lighting systems are among the largest consumers of power in urban areas, so better management of these systems can significantly reduce overall energy consumption and carbon footprints.

In recent years, the focus has been primarily on transitioning to energy-efficient LED lighting. Now, urban authorities are aiming to enhance energy and cost savings by installing intelligent lighting systems. These systems not only optimise energy use but also lower operational and maintenance expenses.

Additionally, cities are exploring ways to integrate street lights into a broader city network. This integration allows the infrastructure to support communication with other devices, such as parking meters, electricity meters, and environmental sensors.

CyanConnode’s standards-based smart lighting systems offer a solution. Utilising advanced Narrowband RF mesh technology, they enable remote monitoring and control of street lighting. This technology not only saves energy but also reduces running and maintenance costs.

Each street lamp or control cabinet is equipped with an RF module, connecting to a Data Concentrator Unit or Gateway for bi-directional communication via CyanConnode’s Lighting Server or any preferred application. A single network can manage up to 250 lamps or cabinets, either individually or in groups.

Energy consumption, current, and voltage are monitored in real time. Dimming rules can be set for specific times of day and applied automatically to each network. The system also quickly identifies potential issues, such as failing bulbs, allowing for preventative maintenance and reducing the need for costly emergency repairs.

CyanConnode’s smart lighting solutions ensure reliable coverage and range, even over varied terrain. They are compatible with products from all leading lighting vendors and adaptable to new lighting technologies. This flexibility means they can be easily retrofitted to existing lamp designs or seamlessly integrated into new installations.

CyanConnode Holdings plc (LON:CYAN) is a world leader in the design and development of Narrowband RF mesh networks that enable Omni Internet of Things (IoT) communications.
