Mozambique has become a cornerstone in the global graphite supply chain, owing to its vast high-grade reserves and increasing international interest in the mineral’s strategic importance. Graphite, a critical component in lithium-ion batteries, is integral to the clean energy transition, powering electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. As nations seek to diversify supply sources and reduce reliance on dominant players, Mozambique’s resource-rich landscape offers a compelling opportunity.
The Balama mine, located in the Cabo Delgado province, exemplifies the country’s potential. Operated by Syrah Resources, this mine is one of the world’s largest graphite operations, with a capacity to produce 350,000 tonnes of graphite concentrate annually. The mine has received significant global backing, including a $150 million loan from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation, highlighting its strategic role in supporting global decarbonisation efforts.
Mozambique’s graphite prospects extend beyond Balama. The Montepuez Graphite Project, also in Cabo Delgado, holds substantial reserves and is set to produce around 100,000 tonnes of flake graphite each year. These projects, with their scale and grade, position Mozambique as a formidable supplier in the global graphite market. Yet, the sector’s growth must be managed with careful attention to community engagement and environmental stewardship. Temporary halts at Balama due to local protests have underscored the importance of inclusive development practices.
A noteworthy entrant to Mozambique’s graphite landscape is Tirupati Graphite, a UK-based company actively developing new projects in the country. Tirupati has acquired two advanced-stage graphite mining assets in Mozambique—Montepuez and Balama Central. These assets collectively offer over 152 million tonnes of mineral resources. The company’s focus is not only on extraction but also on expanding downstream processing capabilities, enabling the production of battery-grade graphite. Tirupati Graphite’s vertically integrated approach is designed to deliver value across the supply chain, making it a promising contributor to Mozambique’s ambitions in the graphite sector.
With expanding demand for clean energy technologies and a growing emphasis on resilient, ethical supply chains, Mozambique is uniquely poised to thrive. The presence of globally recognised projects and the proactive engagement of companies like Tirupati Graphite suggest a vibrant future for the country’s mining industry. As the world accelerates towards sustainable energy solutions, Mozambique’s graphite sector stands ready to meet the rising need with both scale and quality.
