Drax expands hydropower education for future innovators

Drax is extending its groundbreaking hydropower education partnership with Glasgow Science Centre for another year, bringing even more young minds into the world of renewable energy. Following a successful first year that engaged over 1,400 pupils, this initiative continues to foster STEM skills and inspire future careers in the sector.

Drax has committed another £60,000 in funding to ensure Glasgow Science Centre can deliver expert-led workshops on hydropower. This announcement aligns with the 60th anniversary of Cruachan Power Station, Scotland’s largest pumped storage hydro plant, reinforcing the company’s dedication to sustainable energy and education.

The programme offers hands-on learning experiences for primary and secondary school pupils, covering key hydropower concepts such as pumped hydro and run-of-river systems. Primary school students take part in interactive sessions through Glasgow Science Centre’s ‘Learning Lab,’ with visits either to the Science Centre or from its mobile ‘On Tour’ team. Meanwhile, older students in their final years of secondary school participate in STEM Futures Work Readiness Workshops, gaining valuable insight into career opportunities within Scottish hydropower and the essential skills required for success in the industry.

Drax Community Manager for Scotland, Sarah Cameron, highlighted the success of the initiative, expressing confidence that the programme will continue to be a popular and impactful experience for students. With an expanded reach in its second year, the initiative is expected to educate and inspire over 1,500 young people, equipping them with knowledge and enthusiasm for careers in renewable energy.

Glasgow Science Centre’s STEM Futures Project Coordinator, Dr Stuart Meiklejohn, welcomed the continued partnership, emphasising the importance of making hydropower education accessible to students across Scotland. By bringing hydro-themed workshops to classrooms and learning spaces, the initiative strengthens the connection between education and real-world sustainability solutions.

Drax’s commitment to hydropower education reflects its broader mission to drive innovation in renewable energy while supporting the development of a skilled future workforce. As a leader in the sector, Drax continues to invest in knowledge-sharing initiatives that shape the next generation of engineers, scientists, and sustainability experts.
