Drax is making a bold move towards a cleaner future with the launch of its new sustainability framework. Designed to drive measurable progress across its global operations, this initiative reinforces the company’s commitment to being climate, nature, and people positive while advancing its long-term renewable energy strategy.
Developed in collaboration with leading scientists, academics, employees, investors, and environmental NGOs, the sustainability framework establishes 26 clear, time-bound targets. These goals will guide Drax’s approach to key sustainability challenges, from reducing emissions and enhancing biodiversity to improving water efficiency and fostering community development.
A core focus of the framework is on social impact, with investments in STEM education and green skills training to support underserved communities in Drax’s operational regions. Additionally, Drax is implementing nature-positive action plans at its sites and developing conservation strategies in priority biomass sourcing areas to promote ecosystem health by 2030. The company is also accelerating its carbon removals projects, advancing technology to permanently extract CO₂ from the atmosphere.
“This framework marks a fundamental shift in how we manage our environmental and social impact,” said Miguel Veiga-Pestana, Drax Group Chief Sustainability Officer. “By engaging with a diverse group of stakeholders, we’ve built a plan that will ensure our renewable biomass power generation remains both sustainable and responsible for the long term.”
At the heart of this strategy is Drax’s ambitious target to achieve net zero emissions across its value chain by 2040. This includes decarbonizing its supply chains, prioritizing low-carbon biomass delivery to Drax Power Station, and transitioning to renewable energy sources for its pellet production facilities. With this comprehensive framework, Drax is reinforcing its leadership in sustainable energy while driving forward a greener, more resilient future.
Drax Group plc (LON:DRX), trading as Drax, is a power generation business. The principal downstream enterprises are based in the UK and include Drax Power Limited, which runs the biomass fuelled Drax power station, near Selby in North Yorkshire.
