Drax unveils ambitious sustainability plan

Drax is taking bold steps to enhance its global sustainability impact, reinforcing its commitment to climate action, nature preservation, and community support. By introducing a comprehensive new sustainability framework, the renewable energy company is setting measurable, time-bound targets that will guide its journey towards a greener future.

This new framework, developed in collaboration with stakeholders from the scientific community, academia, employees, investors, and environmental NGOs, includes 26 specific objectives designed to advance key priorities such as emissions reduction, biodiversity, forestry management, water efficiency, and community engagement. At the heart of Drax’s plan is its commitment to achieving net zero across its value chain by 2040. This will involve decarbonising supply chains, prioritising low-carbon biomass transportation, and integrating renewable power sources into its pellet production processes.

Drax’s initiatives reflect a proactive approach to environmental responsibility. The company is ramping up its support for under-served communities through STEM education and green skills training, ensuring that the regions where it operates benefit from opportunities in sustainable industries. Additionally, it is investing in advanced digital automation to improve supply chain governance and traceability, strengthening its commitment to ethical sourcing.

Another core focus is biodiversity and ecosystem resilience. By 2030, Drax aims to implement nature-positive action plans across its sites and prioritised biomass sourcing areas, actively contributing to environmental regeneration. The company is also progressing its carbon removal projects, developed in partnership with Elimini, to achieve long-term atmospheric carbon reduction. Enhancing biodiversity across its operational sites remains a priority, reinforcing its role in ecological conservation.

Health, safety, and community representation are integral to Drax’s strategy. The company is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace while ensuring the well-being of its employees and the communities it serves.

Drax Group Chief Sustainability Officer, Miguel Veiga-Pestana, highlighted the significance of this initiative, emphasising that the new framework represents a major shift in how Drax manages its environmental and social impact. He acknowledged the contributions of diverse stakeholders in shaping the plan and reiterated Drax’s dedication to sustainable biomass power generation. Veiga-Pestana also stressed that this launch is only the beginning. With climate challenges intensifying, the company recognises the growing urgency of its mission and remains steadfast in its efforts to drive impactful change.

Drax is a global leader in renewable energy, dedicated to accelerating the transition to a sustainable future. Through innovation in biomass power, carbon removal, and biodiversity initiatives, the company continues to shape a cleaner energy landscape while fostering economic and environmental benefits for communities worldwide.
