Holiday season is off to a record start

The five-day Black Friday weekend, the traditional kickoff of the holiday spending season, was a win for retailers, with record numbers of shoppers spending online and in stores, according to the National Retail Federation, the leading retail trade group.

“We had a very big weekend,” Matthew Shay, President and CEO of the National Retail Federation said, at the group’s annual post-Black Friday post-mortem press conference. “This was a major holiday – a record-setter.”

According to the NRF, 200.4 million consumers shopped online or in stores between Thanksgiving Day and Cyber Monday, up 2% over last year, and the highest number reported by the NRF in the years it has tracked holiday results.
