Q&A with Oliver Fries Head of Engineering at CentralNic Reseller

In this edition of CentralNic Reseller’s Q&A series, we had the chance to speak with Oliver Fries, Head of Engineering, to explore his thoughts on what distinguishes CentralNic Reseller in the domain industry. We also gained insights into the latest trends shaping the market, as well as the exciting projects that underline CentralNic Reseller’s commitment to innovation.

Oliver provided a deep dive into what sets CentralNic Reseller apart. In his view, the company’s expansive global reach and emphasis on catering to local markets is a major differentiator. CentralNic Reseller offers comprehensive services that can be tailored to customer needs, supported by an advanced technical infrastructure and excellent customer service.

Oliver shared his excitement about the ongoing consolidation within the domain industry, where larger companies are acquiring smaller players. This development has the potential to enhance services and boost innovation. However, it also presents challenges, particularly around reducing competition, which could result in higher prices and fewer choices for consumers.

He also explained a lesser-known aspect of domain reselling—the concept of “Expiry Auctions”. This process gives people the chance to bid on domain names that are about to expire before they are made available to the general public again. It’s a unique opportunity for interested buyers to secure domains before they officially re-enter the market.

One of the projects Oliver is particularly proud of is the successful relocation of CentralNic’s data centre from St. Ingbert to Frankfurt, along with the launch of a new JSON/REST API for fraud detection services and Payment Orchestration. He also highlighted the upgrade of their Expiry Auction service, which now supports 50 TLDs, and their collaboration with WHMCS to enhance API automation for an improved user experience.

Reflecting on the challenges facing domain resellers today, Oliver pointed to the highly competitive market. Resellers must find ways to differentiate themselves from both large registrars and fellow resellers. CentralNic Reseller addresses this by offering value-added services, competitive pricing, and strong customer support. This empowers resellers to focus on growth and customer service, rather than the complexities of managing domain portfolios.

When asked about essential traits for success in the domain reselling industry, Oliver stressed the importance of market knowledge and staying updated on trends. Alongside this, he emphasised the role of state-of-the-art technology, strong customer service, and relationship-building. Good communication and a deep understanding of customer needs are crucial in tailoring services effectively.

In his downtime, Oliver keeps up with industry news by following resources like Domain Incite and Domain Name Wire, which he finds valuable for their insights and analysis of trends in the domain space. Although he doesn’t have a single favourite domain name, he appreciates names that are short, memorable, and descriptive.

Finally, when asked to imagine a mascot for CentralNic Reseller, Oliver suggested a wise and tech-savvy owl named “Cenri”. This owl would symbolise the company’s global reach, wisdom, and ability to spot opportunities in the domain industry.

Oliver’s insights shed light on CentralNic Reseller’s unique position in the market, highlighting the company’s innovative approach and focus on customer-centric solutions. Through advanced technology and a deep understanding of market trends, CentralNic Reseller continues to empower its partners to thrive in an ever-evolving industry.

This conversation with Oliver Fries offered a glimpse into the forward-thinking mindset driving CentralNic Reseller’s success. His reflections on industry trends, challenges, and innovations demonstrate the company’s dedication to maintaining a competitive edge in the domain reselling market.
