Amid growing legal action over misleading TV technology claims, a clear shift is underway. The industry spotlight is turning towards truly innovative players with verified cadmium-free quantum dot solutions—opening up new opportunities for investors aligned with authentic, sustainable display technology.
Recent developments in the television market have cast a spotlight on the integrity of quantum dot technology claims. Major brands such as TCL and Hisense are now facing class action lawsuits in the United States, with allegations that certain TVs marketed as containing advanced quantum dot technology may, in fact, lack the very materials that define such displays. The lawsuits argue that in some models, quantum dot materials are either entirely absent or present in quantities too small to contribute meaningfully to image quality, prompting claims of consumer deception and premium pricing under false pretences.
Independent tests commissioned in South Korea by Hansol Chemical found no detectable traces of cadmium or indium in select TCL models—materials that are typically fundamental in quantum dot displays. This prompted a formal complaint to South Korea’s Fair Trade Commission, challenging the legitimacy of TCL’s marketing claims. TCL has pushed back, asserting the presence of cadmium-based quantum dots in their products. However, technical experts continue to question whether the concentration levels are sufficient to deliver the performance consumers expect from genuine quantum dot displays.
In contrast, Samsung has taken a proactive stance by securing third-party certification for its cadmium-free QLED TVs. The Société Générale de Surveillance has formally recognised Samsung’s products for their excellence in cadmium-free quantum dot technology, confirming compliance with RoHS standards and highlighting their commitment to safer, non-toxic materials. This certification follows Samsung’s 2023 decision to take a licence to Nanoco’s intellectual property, settling litigation concerning the use of Nanoco’s patented cadmium-free quantum dot technologies in Samsung’s displays.
Nanoco’s materials, based on a cadmium-free platform, represent a validated and sustainable solution for next-generation displays. The company remains focused on the continual enhancement of its quantum dot technology and is committed to accelerating the industry’s transition away from cadmium-based materials. Nanoco’s innovations are helping drive transparency, regulatory compliance, and superior performance in display technologies, providing investors with exposure to a crucial and growing segment of the electronics market.
Nanoco Group PLC (LON:NANO) leads the world in the research, development and large-scale manufacture of heavy metal-free nanomaterials for use in displays, lighting, vertical farming, solar energy and bio-imaging.
