Regional aircraft manufacturer ATR is behind the ATR 72, the best-selling aircraft in the market segment of 90 seats or less. The aircraft is designed to be operated in all regions of the world and can fly in extreme temperatures from -45°C to +50°C. Another critical factor in their popularity is the ability to take off and land on short unpaved runaways down to 1,000 meters, a quarter of the runway length at London Heathrow or Paris CDG.
Where did it start?
The ATR program was officially launched on November 4th, 1981, when Aerospatiale (now Airbus) and Aeritalia (now Leonardo) merged their regional aircraft designs into a single project. The ATR 42 made its first flight in 1984, and the ATR 72 was officially launched in January 1986, delivering its first aircraft to Finnair in October 1989.
