t’s safe to say that the rise of large language models (LLMs), and the whirlwind caused by ChatGPT in particular, is sending shockwaves through practically every field, especially education. Seeing as the global education system is based on a foundation of writing, it only makes sense that students were one of the first groups to enthusiastically adopt and fully exploit ChatGPT’s huge potential. Naturally, educators are now reeling.
New affordable and accessible digital tools have prompted such shifts in the education system before, calculators being a good example. Although I would argue that it’s important for young pupils to learn how to perform basic calculations both electronically and with good old pencil and paper, in higher education, calculators considerably augment students’ calculation capabilities, allowing for more complex ideas and ways of learning to emerge.
