TM Forum Innovate Asia 2024 presented a dynamic and insightful exploration into how Communications Service Providers (CSPs) are reshaping their strategies in response to rapid technological changes. Held in Bangkok, the event brought together industry leaders to discuss key trends that are redefining the role of CSPs in the digital landscape.
A central focus at the event was the transformative power of Artificial Intelligence (AI), with Generative AI (GenAI) emerging as a major topic of conversation. AI was acknowledged not just as a technological advancement, but as a critical tool for improving customer experience, enhancing network efficiency, and driving innovation across the telecommunications value chain. Panels highlighted how AI is essential for CSPs to remain competitive in an increasingly digital world.
Perhaps the most notable takeaway from the event was the industry’s realisation that focusing solely on connectivity is no longer a sustainable model. The shift towards becoming solution providers, or “techcos,” marks a fundamental change in how CSPs operate. This transformation includes the adoption of new business models that prioritise comprehensive solutions over simple network services. TM Forum introduced an expansion of its Open Digital Architecture (ODA) Canvas, which will help CSPs of all sizes build carrier-grade ODA solutions using pre-built modules.
A key discussion topic was the evolution of business models, with a particular focus on the importance of customer-centric approaches and leveraging partnerships to maximise revenue. This was exemplified in the panel on creating a blueprint for product launch success, where experts discussed the role of AI in improving product development and market entry success rates.
On the topic of 5G, the conversations took a more practical turn, with discussions centred around optimising existing 5G investments rather than speculating about future technologies like 6G. The focus was on extracting value from current 5G Standalone infrastructure, with panel sessions exploring how advanced software solutions could unlock new revenue streams for CSPs.
The B2B sector also emerged as a significant opportunity for growth, with experts emphasising the untapped potential in this market. A key statistic highlighted the $23 billion in potential B2B revenue that CSPs could be missing due to ineffective customer service. Addressing the complex needs of business clients with tailored solutions was seen as crucial for tapping into this lucrative segment.
Sustainability was another major theme, with participants acknowledging the sector’s responsibility to meet the environmental targets set by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations. The industry’s path towards achieving net-zero goals, particularly in light of COP29, remains challenging, but there is a collective determination to find innovative solutions to meet these ambitious targets.
Despite a smaller turnout this year, the event provided a wealth of valuable insights. The telecom industry is at a crucial turning point, where embracing AI, expanding beyond traditional connectivity, targeting B2B opportunities, and committing to sustainability are all vital steps towards shaping the future of digital communications.
