In Gloster, Mississippi, a new era of community well-being is taking shape with the installation of a state-of-the-art walking track, conveniently located next to the National Guard Armory building on North Captain Gloster Drive. Spearheaded by a $130,000 contribution from Drax, this transformative project underscores the company’s commitment to fostering health and connection in the communities it serves.
Rural areas often face challenges in accessing recreational facilities, and Gloster is no exception. The absence of easily accessible parks or gyms has long limited opportunities for residents to prioritise their health. Recognising this need, Drax, in collaboration with town leadership, has made the vision of a safe and welcoming walking track a reality.
Construction of the track began in late 2024, and a formal groundbreaking ceremony is on the horizon. The project is more than just an infrastructure enhancement—it is a community endeavour. With funds allocated from the Drax Community Fund, Mayor Jerry Norwood took charge, assembling a skilled local team led by Owen Holland and Sons to bring the project to fruition. The focus on utilising local businesses for construction not only boosts Gloster’s economy but also reinforces a sense of shared achievement.
The walking track is set to deliver multiple benefits, addressing the pressing need for a safe, well-lit environment for outdoor exercise. Walking is widely acknowledged as an excellent means to improve cardiovascular health, maintain weight, and reduce the risk of chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension. Beyond its physical advantages, the track fosters social interaction, offering a space for neighbours to connect and for families to enjoy the outdoors together.
